Hon’ble President of India graces 22nd Convocation of NIMHANS

National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS), Bengaluru held its 22nd Convocation on 30th December 2017. Shri Ram Nath Kovind, Hon’ble President of India, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and delivered the Convocation Address.

The Hon’ble President of India, in his address, called NIMHANS a “national asset” and said the institute has had a commendable record of treating about 7 lakh patients each year, from various parts of the country and abroad—most of whom are from the poorer sections. He underscored the need to take up access to treatment facilities by 2022 as a national mission while also addressing the shortage of mental health professionals.

He also said that, other than conventional treatment, the role of counselling services and of practices such as yoga and vipassana meditation in helping those with mental health problems should also be explored with greater vigour.

Shri Vajubhai Vala, Hon’ble Governor of Karnataka; Shri H. N. Ananth Kumar, Hon’ble Minister for Chemicals & Fertilizers, Government of India; Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda, Hon’ble Minister for Health & Family Welfare, Government of India & President of NIMHANS; Dr. Sharanprakash R. Patil, Hon’ble Minister for Medical Education, Government of Karnataka & Vice-President of NIMHANS were present on the occasion as the Guests of Honour.

As many as 148 students received various post-graduate, doctoral and post-doctoral degrees on successful completion of their academic programmes at the Convocation. Academic excellence awards were presented to 11 meritorious students by the Hon’ble President of India.


The state-of-the-art Dr. RM Varma Sub-Speciality Block for Neurosciences, Intraoperative MRI Operation Theatres and Medical Cyclotron Facility were inaugurated by the Hon’ble President of India. Foundation stones for new projects viz. Speciality Block-Psychiatry and Central Laboratory Complex were also laid on the occasion.
